Girls-Childs Day

A USA based Quantus Medical Foundation founded and facilitated by Nigerian born Physician, Dr. Nnenna Ihekoromadu has activated an outreach programme to positively impact 600 students’ health across Abia and Enugu states through practical health education, personal hygiene kits and guidance on confidence, personal safety and seeking care.

The outreach which involves health talks, practical hygiene education, question-and-answer sessions and distribution of health kits, demonstrates Dr Ihekoromadu’s commitment to improving healthcare in Nigeria and helping girls to understand their bodies and seek care with confidence.

The outreach commenced on Friday, 9 October 2026, at Abayi Girls Secondary School, Aba, Abia state, as part of activities marking the annual 11th October International Day of the Girl Child, with the schedule to extend it on Monday, 12 October to Afugiri Girls Secondary School, Umuahia, and Idaw River Girls Secondary School, Enugu, Enugu state

According to the programme for the celebration under the theme “Healthy Girls. Informed Choices. Stronger Futures,” the targeted students would be educated and encouraged to understand their bodies, recognise health concerns, speak up and know when and where to seek help.

The sessions would also address them on their personal hygiene, self-confidence, and the importance of education in achieving their ambitions.

At the Aba event, the Chief Medical Director of the And General Hospital, Dr. Amaka Kamalu, urged the students to maintain good personal hygiene and conduct themselves with confidence and dignity, stressing that good grooming was not determined by expensive clothing or family wealth, but by cleanliness, self-respect and responsible behaviour.

Cautioning them against application of skin-bleaching creams and negative social media influences, she urged the female students to believe in their abilities.

Dr Kamalu told them, “You are a girl-child today, but tomorrow you will be a woman, a leader, an innovator and a nation builder,”.

In the keynote lecture delivered by Dr Uzo Oguine on behalf of Dr Ihekoromadu ( the Quantus Foundation Founder) the targeted female students were tasked on prioritizing their health, and speaking out whenever they experience health challenges or abuse.

According to Dr Oguine, with Quantus Foundation’s presence at Aba General Hospital, Abia State University Teaching Hospital and Abia Specialist Hospital, Umuahia, its Patient Liaison Officers can help students access hospital services and reach appropriate healthcare professionals.

Oguine therefore urged the students not to suffer in silence, but to seek support from trusted adults and qualified health professionals, emphasizing that good health remains essential while pursuing whatever career they chose.

The outreach builds on the Foundation’s work with the Abia State Government through the Abia Healthcare Rebirth Initiative, that supports hospital teams and promotes compassion, accountability, respect and excellence in patient care.

While the Team Lead of Patient Liaison Officers in Abia State, Egbe Bernard Esang, expressed optimism that the lessons taught by the outreach would help the girls make informed decisions and carry the knowledge into their homes and communities, the Dean of Studies of the school , Mrs. Chika Ezissi, on behalf of the school management, appreciated the Foundation for selecting the school.

She encouraged students to share what they had learned with others so that more girls could benefit.

Speaking on behalf of the students, the Senior Prefect, John Golden Chiamaka, thanked the Foundation for providing them the opportunity to learn about their health, confidence and personal development, stating that the programme also underscored that achieving their ambitions also depended on understanding, believing in and working diligently, rather than on wealth or luxury.
