The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), Lagos State Council, has said its planned shutdown today is aimed at securing better fares, lower commissions, improved safety and welfare for ride-hailing drivers.
The union said the planned protest and industrial action should not be seen merely as an attempt to introduce alternative ride-hailing applications, but as a response to what it described as persistent challenges affecting drivers’ earnings, working conditions and livelihoods.
The union said it was seeking sustainable reforms rather than temporary concessions, insisting that drivers should have a meaningful role in decisions affecting their earnings and working conditions.
It added that alternative platforms could provide an option for drivers who voluntarily chose to explore them if existing operators failed to address their demands.
AUATON maintained that it was not opposed to the growth of ride-hailing companies but argued that their commercial success should take into account the contributions and welfare of the drivers who sustain their operations.
The union urged drivers to approach Monday’s planned action with unity, discipline and a commitment to peaceful protest, describing it as part of a broader effort to secure better working conditions for app-based transporters in Lagos State and across Nigeria.
