The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, identified as Sunday Nimel, over his alleged involvement in a series of residential armed robbery operations in Asaba, the state capital, and its environs.
The police also recovered three firearms, including an AK-47 rifle and two locally made cut-to-size guns, alongside three rounds of live ammunition during an intelligence-led operation.
The command’s spokesperson Bright Edafe said the arrest followed credible intelligence gathered by operatives of the Commissioner of Police’s Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT), Ughelli, in collaboration with local vigilantes.
He said the operation was carried out on October 7, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m., leading to the arrest of the suspect, who is alleged to be a member of an armed robbery syndicate operating in Asaba and neighbouring communities.
According to him, the suspect made useful statements during interrogation, which enabled operatives to locate a hideout near Okpanam City Gate.
A subsequent search of the hideout reportedly led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, three rounds of live ammunition and two locally made cut-to-size guns, he explained
He said investigations were ongoing to establish the full extent of the suspect’s alleged involvement in the criminal activities and determine whether other members of the suspected syndicate were involved.
Commending the operatives for the operation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel E. Erale, praised their efforts and reiterated the command’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks across the state.
Erale said the command would sustain intelligence-led policing and other operational strategies aimed at preventing crime, apprehending suspects and protecting residents.
He also called on members of the public to support the police by providing credible and timely information about suspicious activities and individuals.
The police commissioner assured residents that the command remained committed to protecting lives and property, while urging communities to cooperate with security agencies in the collective effort to improve public safety.
