The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has responded to 1,409 road crashes and rescued 670 victims across Lagos State in nine months, highlighting the scale of road accidents and the demand for emergency response services.
The agency disclosed this over the weekend, saying its operatives had continued to respond to crash scenes, rescue victims and manage traffic to prevent secondary accidents.
According to the agency, its personnel are deployed to accident scenes to assess situations, evacuate victims, divert traffic and ensure that emergency responders have access to affected areas.
The agency also works with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and other emergency response organisations to provide assistance to crash victims.
Bakare-Oki urged motorists to observe speed limits, obey traffic signals, wear seat belts and ensure their vehicles were roadworthy.
He also warned against distracted driving and reckless manoeuvres, stressing that responsible driving remained essential to preventing avoidable accidents.
The LASTMA boss called on commercial transport operators, dispatch riders, private motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution and comply with traffic regulations.
He urged members of the public to report road crashes, obstructions and other traffic-related emergencies through the agency’s toll-free short code, 3367.
Bakare-Oki noted that road crashes often result in deaths, serious injuries, financial losses and emotional distress for victims and their families.
He added that regular vehicle inspections, defensive driving and cooperation among road users were necessary to improve road safety across the state.
The agency reiterated its commitment to strengthening emergency response and public enlightenment, urging residents to play their part in reducing road crashes and protecting lives.
