Benue State Government has sealed two private schools in Makurdi over alleged violation of its textbook policy and the victimisation of pupils whose parents refused to buy learning materials directly from the schools.
The affected schools are Orenda School and Opal School.
The Benue Education Quality Assurance and Examinations Board (BEQAEB), which carried out the enforcement exercise, said the action followed complaints and formal petitions from parents.
The Board’s Executive Secretary, Dr Terna Francis, led the operation alongside officials of its Directorate of Enforcement and Compliance.
According to the board, the schools allegedly made the purchase of customised exercise books and test materials directly from their management compulsory for pupils to enable them attend classes.
It said the enforcement action was also intended to deter other private school proprietors from violating education policies.
BEQAEB reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing regulations across public and private schools in the state, warning proprietors against exploiting parents or compromising pupils’ welfare.
It, therefore, urged parents experiencing similar violations in other schools to submit formal complaints supported by evidence for investigation and appropriate action.
