Takes flood campaign to Makoko

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Lagos State branch, has urged residents to prepare for floods and other emergencies at household level.

It, however, took its disaster awareness campaign to Makoko, a community vulnerable to flooding.

No fewer than 120 volunteers and members of the organisation participated in an awareness walk through the community on Tuesday to mark the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The day, observed yearly on October 13, promotes efforts to reduce disaster risks and build safer, more resilient communities. This year’s global theme, “Resilience Starts at Home,” highlights the role of individuals and families in preventing disasters and reducing their impact.

During the walk, volunteers distributed information and educational materials on flooding and disaster risk reduction, encouraging residents to take practical steps to protect their lives, property and livelihoods.

The exercise was flagged off by the branch’s Vice-Chairman, Segun Akande, with support from the Branch Secretary, Olakunle Lasisi; the Disaster Management Officer, Ige Oladimeji, and other officials and members.

The organisation stressed that disaster preparedness should not be left to emergency responders or government agencies alone but should also begin with individuals and families and extend to the wider community.

It also emphasised the importance of public awareness, particularly in flood-prone areas, where timely information and preventive measures can help reduce losses during emergencies.

Through direct engagement with residents, the Red Cross said it hoped to encourage safer practices and strengthen the community’s ability to anticipate, prepare for and respond to disasters.

The campaign forms part of the organisation’s efforts to promote disaster risk reduction and protect vulnerable communities across Lagos State, with an emphasis on the need to prepare before emergencies occur.
