Group pledges legal support for fraud victims

The National Human Rights Commission

A civil society group, the Initiative Against Human Rights Abuse and Torture (INAHURAT), has urged victims of land fraud in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to come forward with their complaints and seek justice, pledging legal assistance.

INAHURAT, which addressed newsmen in Abuja yesterday while presenting allegations of multiple land disputes involving properties in Katampe, Guzape and Kado districts, urged the affected individuals to report their experiences to the appropriate authorities.

The representative of the group, Dr Maxwell Opara, said INAHURAT was seeking greater accountability in handling land-related complaints. He called on law enforcement agencies to investigate the alleged irregularities in property transactions and the administration of land records.

Noting that questions had arisen regarding corporate ownership records, property titles, and the circumstances surrounding the handling of documents connected to some disputed properties, the group also decried the role of certain legal practitioners and security personnel in the cases. It further urged the relevant professional and law enforcement bodies to examine the allegations.

Among other measures, INAHURAT urged affected residents to preserve all relevant documents, including title papers, transaction records, correspondence, and copies of petitions, and to submit their complaints to the appropriate law enforcement or land administration authorities.

Meanwhile, it called on the Nigeria Police Force and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate complaints of alleged interference with inquiries and ensure that any evidence of wrongdoing is addressed through lawful procedures.
