The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has lauded President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its investment in the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, saying the project could improve connectivity, boost commercial activities and ease students’ movement between regions.
The association’s President, Babatunde Afeez Akinteye, stated this after leading a delegation of NANS on an inspection tour of the highway as part of its nationwide Federal Roads Project Tour.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of the major federal infrastructure projects being undertaken by the Tinubu administration.
Akinteye said the delegation was impressed by the scale of the project, describing it as a major infrastructure undertaking with the potential to improve transportation and stimulate economic activities across the country.
He said the highway’s bridges, construction scale, and accompanying rail system reflected the government’s investment in infrastructure development.
According to him, the economic importance of the project extends beyond road construction, as its completion is expected to facilitate the movement of people and goods, open up economic opportunities and strengthen commercial activities across geopolitical zones.
The NANS president said the association was particularly interested in how the project would improve students’ welfare and mobility, noting that many students travel across the country to pursue academic programmes in institutions located in the South-West and South-South.
He said improved connectivity could make journeys to campuses in the two regions easier and reduce the difficulties students encounter when travelling long distances for their studies.
Akinteye commended Tinubu for what he described as his administration’s commitment to major infrastructure development. He also praised the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for his role in driving the project.
“Quality infrastructure is essential to national development, of which Nigerian students are major beneficiaries,” he said.
He added that the association would continue its nationwide inspection of federal road projects, particularly those leading to university campuses, to assess their condition and offer recommendations where necessary.
The NANS president said the tour was intended to enable the association to evaluate federal road infrastructure and provide feedback on projects affecting students and other road users.
