THREE unions at the University of Ibadan (UI) yesterday paralysed administrative and academic activities following a protest over non-payment of their earned allowances for the month of June.

The protesting unions, Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and National Association of Technologists (NAT), which barricaded all the entrant gates into the university premises thus preventing movement into the institution, accused the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole, of reneging on his promise to increase the top-up earned allowances paid to workers in the university, alleging that the institution authorities did not pay anything in June salary.

The unions were said ‎to have met with the university council where they agreed that the earned allowances be reviewed upward with two weeks briefing from the Vice Chancellor.

The protesters went from one department and unit ‎to stop people from working, urging them to join in the protest.

In an interview with the National Treasurer of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Ademola Aremu, who said his union was not involved in the protest, stated that the protest was occasioned by ‎misunderstanding and information gap.

Aremu said while the university wage bill stood at N904 million monthly, the management allegedly received N932 million but used the excess in paying promotion arrears of members of staff.
