ONDO State Government has urged the Federal Government to re-consider its stance on laying-off of thousands of health workers engaged under the Sure-P Midwives Scheme, in order not to thwart the efforts recorded so far at checking high mortality rate in the country.  

This appeal was made by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju, who gave the advice at a meeting in Akure with the 400 health workers engaged under the Federal Government programme in state. 

Adeyanju said the Federal Government should rather block leakages in the system and possibly exit from the programme gradually rather than abruptly, due to the significant impact of the programme on reducing maternal and child mortality in Nigeria.

He however, revealed that the state government is working out plans to retain over 400 health workers employed under the SURE-P Programme, to avoid the setback on the gains recorded so far.
