At least one civilian was killed in renewed overnight unrest in Burundi’s capital Bujumbura, with the night marked by a string of grenade attacks and heavy gunfire, police and witnesses said Saturday.

Eyewitnesses said one person was shot dead in the city when police opened fire in response to a series of around 10 grenade blasts targeting police positions in parts of the city that have seen weeks of demonstrations against the central African nation’s president, Pierre Nkurunziza.

“These were coordinated attacks which targeted police positions and police patrols. Fortunately there was no damage,” a senior police official, who asked not to be named, told AFP.

The crisis in Burundi revolves around President Nkurunziza’s bid to stand for a third consecutive five-year term, which his opponents say is unconstitutional and violates a peace deal that ended a dozen years of civil war in 2006.

Over 70 people have been killed in more than two months of protests, with over 158,000 refugees fleeing to neighbouring countries, according to the latest UN figures.

Presidential polls are due on July 15 followed by senatorial elections on July 24, but the five-nation East African Community (EAC) on Monday called for elections to be delayed by two weeks, to July 30, in order to allow time for mediation between the government and opposition.

Government spokesman Philippe Nzobanariba said in a statement Friday that the election commission had been asked to implement the EAC recommendation for a delay to the vote, but that it should be held no later than July 26.

The election commission has proposed July 21 or 22 as suitable dates, sources said.

Parliamentary polls, in which Nkurunziza’s ruling CNDD-FDD party scored a landslide win, were held on May 29 but boycotted by the opposition and internationally condemned.
