A group, Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC), has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his fight against corruption.

The anti-corruption organisation said it is delighted with the renewed vigour and effort by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to combat corruption, as illustrated by the recent wave of arrests and prompt arraignment for trial of some former state governors and other political figures implicated for corruption.

The Chairman of the group, Olanrewaju Suraju, in a media interaction with journalists in Lagos at Falana Chamber, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, said the new administration has commenced on a commendable note, which according to him, “ the body cannot ignore but find a way to compliment the effort of Muhammadu Buhari.

Suraju urged the president to strengthen the anti-corruption agencies if he wishes to see a Nigeria free from corruption.

“We call on President Buhari to take urgent steps to strengthen and guarantee security of tenure of anti-corruption agencies for effective performance. Appointment of heads of anti-corruption agencies must be based on integrity, leadership and professional competences as well as performance and must follow legally established procedures. They must be allowed to work independently and anyone found wanting at the discharge of his duty should be removed from office,” he said

While urging the President to also tackle the rot in the Judiciary system, Suraju called for total overhauling of the judicial system, which he said acts as backbone for corrupt public officials.

“We welcome the commitment of the government to the reform of the judiciary and criminal justice system. In this regard, we call on the government to commence this reform process without further delay. As part of this reform, government should ensure that judges indicted for corruption or acting contrary to their oath of office are appropriately sanctioned,” he said.
