RESIDENTS of Agbado community in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State have appealed to Ogun State’s Governor Ibikunle Amosun to, as a matter of urgency, fulfill his electoral promise of rehabilitating roads in the area.
They specifically pointed at the sorry state of Osoba road, which links Isaga, Oke-Aro and Ifako/Ijaye council area of Lagos State. The road has been a major headache to motorists and other road users in the last five years.
The over one kilometer road, named after former governor of the state, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, after his administration tarred the road, years back, is in a serious state of disrepair, causing pain to motorists. The stretch from Agbado Crossing bus stop, through pipeline, to the Toyin area, has become an eyesore. Incessant downpour has worsened the road. It is now filled with craters and potholes.
Being the link road to the area, it is very busy and is plied mainly by commercial buses and motorcycles. It has become a thorn in the flesh of people in the area, whose feeble communal effort has not been able to put the road in a motorable state.
As at Wednesday, when The Guardian visited the place, hardcore stones had been deposited on a section of the affected road. But despite this, motorists still find it difficult to maneuver their way through the axis. Several vehicles become stuck in the bad sections, compounding the traffic situation.
It was gathered that Governor Amosun, prior to the last general elections, promised to rehabilitate the road. But since his return to office, he has reneged on the undertaking.
A community leader in the Pipeline area, Apostle Amos Olawoye, said the road is very important to the area because it is a shortcut to Lagos, which saves people the longer time of having to travel on the expressway. He said due to its present state, motorists and other road users go by the longer route, with the attendant discomfort.
“Why was this Osoba road abandoned by Governor Amosun? He should remember that he got the highest votes in Agbado in the two elections that brought him to power. We are imploring him to repair this road before it turns into a fish pond,” Olawoye said.
A trader, Madam Alani, who operates a restaurant along the road, lamented its terrible state, saying fares have skyrocketed as a result. She noted that the volume of customers patronising her has reduced drastically because of the trouble they face trying to visit her shop. She appealed to the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the council and the governor to save them from the anguish.
