THE Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced that it has not given final approval to the requests by the distribution companies to increase tariff.

In a statement yesterday, NERC said any information to the contrary is mere speculation.
The Head, Public Affairs at the commission, Dr. Usman Abba-Arabi, who made the clarification in Abuja, noted that the requests were still undergoing technical evaluation, noting that details of what may be approved were not yet known.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is still reviewing details of applications for tariff review received from electricity distribution companies and outcome of public consultations with electricity consumers by the Commission and electricity distribution companies.”

The commission said it is preposterous to speculate on the range of increase or the tendency in electricity tariff at this stage.

It is at the end of the ongoing review exercise to be concluded in a few weeks time that the figures of increase or decrease would be clearer to anyone.

Most of the news items are in the realm of speculative journalism. The final figure is not clear to anyone as some of the distribution companies are still providing clarifications sought by the commission’s technical team working on their applications. Some of them are also making corrections to their applications on the basis of those clarifications,” NERC said.
