According to Kalu: “I was not born blind. I got blind through domestic accident. Two people were fighting and one of them mistakenly hit one of my eyes and during treatment in the hospital, I was given wrong medication which affected my other eye.
I feel lifted psychologically and academically because this scholarship will boost my morale to perform well.”
The co-founder of OAM, Onome Okagbare Majaro, told The Guardian that it was first university scholarship and they were motivated to do it because the boy was visually impaired.
“We decided to give him a chance because he was visually impaired though he is an albino. When I heard his story and met him, he seemed like a bright boy and we decided to put a smile on his face by paying all his fees including hostel fees for the duration of his course,” she said.
