KADUNA State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has dissolved the interim management committees (IMCs) of the 23 local councils in the state, following the expiration of the tenure of the officials.

El-Rufai, who said that the tenure of the officials would have been extended, explained that because members of the House of Assembly were on recess, such extension was not possible.

A statement by the Media Aide to the Governor, Mallam Samuel Aruwan, stated that, “the interim management committees of the 23 local councils in Kaduna State have been dissolved. This was based on the expiration of their six-month term of office.”

According to Aruwan: “The committees members were appointed on July 3rd 2015 for a period of six months in the first instance,” adding that, “the Local Government (Administration) Law No. 12 of 2012 provides that their tenure can be extended by the Kaduna State House of Assembly.

“The government has made appropriate submissions for the extension of the tenure of the IMCs, but the House of Assembly is currently on recess. Therefore, the lawful thing to do is to dissolve the committees with effect from January 6th 2016.”

Aruwan further said: “Malam Nasir El-Rufai, the Governor of Kaduna State also extended his profound appreciation to all the IMC members for their selfless and dedicated service to their councils in particular, and Kaduna State in general.

“The government has also directed each IMC to hand over to the most senior director in their respective local councils, who will oversee the office of chairman pending action by members of the House of Assembly.”
