Octogenarian remanded for allegedly burning 82-year-old to death

COURT-LOGOAN octogenarian, Mr. Ayodele Adeyeye, was on Thursday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate court for burning to death an 82-year old grandfather, Olanrewaju Adu. The police prosecutor, Sgt. Bankole Olasunkanmi, told the court that the accused person committed the offence on January 2, this year at Odo Osi street, Ayetoro-Ekiti.

He alleged that Adeyeye, on the said date, unlawfully murdered Adu and burnt him to cover the dastardly act. But the unlawful ‘cremation” was not completed before he was sighted by passers-bye.

The Police officer, who did not disclose why the accused person committed the crime, however, told the court that the offence contravened Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap C 16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012. He said he had duplicated his case file and sent to the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutor (DPP) for legal advice.

The plea of the accused was not taken, as his counsel, Mr Taiwo Awotile sought for a date of adjournment pending the outcome of DPP advice.

Chief Magistrate Idowu Ayenimo consequently remanded the accused person in prison custody till the outcome of DPP advice. He, however, adjourned the case to February 12, this year for further hearing.
