
Ohaubunwa, who is representing the Abia North Senatorial District and the sponsor of the tournament, said the idea behind the tournament was to give back to his constituency and to develop talents that are abound in the area.
“I am happy that this tournament is coming up for the second time and I want to use this to explore the possibility of using football to empower the youths of Abia North and make them have a sense of belonging.
” Adding that: “I believe that this will raise future stars that would do the nation proud in the future.”
The Coordinator of the event and President of Grassroots Sports Federation, John Ekpeyong, said ex-internationals that include Peter Rufai, Friday Ekpo, Emmanuel Amuneke, Kanu Nwankwo and Lawrence Ukaegbu, are expected to grace the occasion.
According to him, the presence of these Nigerian football stars was to boost the championship and to encourage the lads that will be participating in the event to aim high in the course of their career.
So far, 15 teams have indicated interest in the two-week long event, where the first three placed teams will share a sum of N500,000.
