Buhari sues for unity Buhari[/caption]CHAIRMAN of the North-West chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop David Bakare, has implored the Federal Government to deploy 10 per cent of the recovered funds from the $2.1 billion arms deal for the education and upkeep of dependants of soldiers that lost their lives to the Boko Haram insurgency in the North.
The cleric, who made the call yesterday, maintained that arresting and jailing the looters was not enough, as it would not ameliorate the suffering of the dependants.
“What I want us to understand from today’s celebration is that those who labour and die for our nation deserve honour and care. I believe if we find those who have stolen our wealth, it is not enough to take them to EFCC, it is not enough to jail them, 10 per cent of every stolen money should be used to take care of the families of our fallen heroes.
“Today, we are talking about the arms deal scandal and we hear that some people are returning money, that money was meant to buy arms. If it was not used for that purpose and some soldiers lost their lives as a result of the act then, their children should be taken care of from the money recovered. The authorities should take part of that money and give scholarships to children or family of every soldier that lost his or her life as a result of the insurgency in the North East,” Bakare appealed.
Meanwhile, President Mohammadu Buhari has sued for unity as a sign of respect for the sacrifices of the nation’s fallen heroes.
Represented by Vice President Yomi Osinbajo at the interdenominational church service organised as part of activities to commemorate this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration, the President said the progress of the country depended on unity of her people despite the diversity in religion, culture and others.
“As a people, let us renew our determination to build a strong and united nation where freedom, justice, peace and prosperity are easily within reach, a nation where we emphasize those things that bind us rather than those things that divide us.
