FORMER Nigeria’s Ambassador to Brazil, Dr. Patrick Dele Cole, has advocated the use of technology such as Internet service to ease governance and tackle corruption in the country.
He, therefore, stressed the need for Internet security, as some smart Nigerians have converted the advantages of Internet usage for fraudulent activities.
Cole, who stated this during the launching of Spectranet, a 4G Internet services in Port Harcourt, yesterday, said: “Internet will help to make things faster in governance, so with e- government, you are able to communicate quickly so that a file that moves from hand to hand for one month can be treated within an hour. It can also help in checking whether debts have been paid or not, and those who are owing the company.
“Efficiency is greater antidote to corruption, Internet will help to bring efficiency and if you have an efficient organisation, it will be difficult for you to be corrupt. So, with a good e-government service, you cannot be corrupt”, he said.
While describing the Spectranet service as very reliable, he expressed hope that with its arrival in Rivers State, more investors would be attracted, adding that it would boost the economy of the state.
He said: “With the Internet services coming in now, it means that Rivers State will be more on the map, that means we will be able to disseminate the gift that we have and that will attract more people to come to Rivers State. There is a correlation between Internet penetration and the growth in the economy, and I am satisfied with the Internet services but this is a step ahead of what we have been getting. It is the latest of the generations, it is a 4G and I belief it is will a great service”, he further said.
The Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr. David Venn, said though people in Nigeria use Internet for diverse reasons, but resort to e-governance by government in Nigeria will indescribably change the way things work in Nigeria.
Venn, who expressed optimism that the launch of the Spectrnet Internet service in Rivers State would boost business and economy of the state, particularly with the 4G Internet service that is reliable, fast and affordable, said the launch of the Internet service in Rivers State would boost businesses, economy and several other things.
Besides, former National Commissioner, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ishmail Igbani, noted that the country has witnessed very poor Internet services, which discouraged him from using the Internet, but expressed optimism that the new Internet provider would make a difference.
