Governor Adams Oshiomhole‎ of Edo State has pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to grant presidential pardon to the 66 soldiers, whose death sentence were recently commuted to 10 years imprisonment by the Army for insubordination and mutiny among other offences.

The governor’s plea for clemency was contained in his remarks during an event to mark this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day. He hinged his appeal on the strength of the recent revelations of the $2.1b funds for arms purchase that was allegedly mismanaged by the last administration.

While acknowledging the noble role of the Armed Forces in ensuring peace and unity of the nation, even at the cost of their lives, Oshiomhole said it would amount to injustice, if soldiers sent to the war front without arms were made to rot in prison, whereas those who diverted the funds meant for Arms purchases are being granted bail at the law courts.
