Nomadic cattle herders have all but left Benue state, driven away by fighting over access to resources and a new law banning migratory herding, an age-old practice necessary for the survival of the livestock. More than 100 people have been killed since early January, with 100,000 fleeing their homes to safety, according to the local emergency management agency (SEMA). Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has urged the people of Agatu Council to keep supporting security agents deployed to their communities to sustain peace.
Ortom gave the charge yesterday at St. Bridget’s Parish Aila in Agatu during a thanksgiving for the final profession of religious vows by Rev. Sr. Vera Inalegwu. He lauded the security agents for working tirelessly to sustain peace in the area and urged the people to sustain their cooperation with them.

The governor assured the people of his administration’s determination to amicably resolve the crisis between Abugbe and Agbaduma, even as he charged members of the two communities to cooperate with his administration in that regard.

Ortom noted that it was the policy of his administration to always employ the carrot approach in resolving crisis before applying the stick approach, expressing the hope that no one would allow himself to be a victim of the law.

While acknowledging the people’s security challenges, the governor commended their resilience in returning to their ancestral homes to rebuild what the herdsmen had destroyed. He commended the newly-professed nun for choosing to serve God and humanity through the religious vocation in addition to the medical profession, saying she had done Benue proud and that her thanksgiving would inspire many in the area to volunteer to work for God.

Former minister of interior and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial flag-bearer for Benue South in next year’s general elections, Abba Moro, while praying God to guide and direct the nun in his vineyard, asked the almighty to guide Ortom to deliver on his mandate to Benue people.Rev. Fr. Francis Atama, in his homily, tasked Christians to always appreciate God in for his mighty works, charging the reverend to be a good ambassador of Benue people.
