TEACHERS in public primary and secondary schools in Nasarawa State have embarked on strike over alleged failure of the state government to meet their demands.

The industrial action, which was called by the Nasarawa State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), has led to the closure of public primary and secondary schools in the state.

Speaking to journalists in Lafia after the executive council meeting in Lafia, the state chairman of the union, Titi Jatau, said the workers embarked on strike due to the inability of the state government to respond to the 21-days ultimatum given by the union, which expired yesterday.

According to the chairman, “Apart from the half payments of their salaries for many months, other grievances include; non-payment of January 2015 salaries arrears, non-promotion of teachers, and lack of teaching aid in schools.”

“Since January 2015, the government has not supplied chalk and instructional materials to primary schools across the state,” Jatau added.
