GOVERNOR Theodore Orji of Abia has called for a task force to check production and selling of fake vehicle number plates , stressing that  the illegal    practice has denied his  state needed revenue.

The governor who spoke when the Corps Marshall  of the Federal Road Safety Commission, ( FRSC) Mr. Boboyemi  Oyeyemi visited him at Government House Umuahia , commended the  sustained efforts of the FRSC in the state  in reducing vehicular accidents , pledging  his government’s sustained  support to the Commission.

  Saying also that  his administration has commenced expanding internal  roads in the state to   accommodate more vehicles and lessen  traffic congestion and road accidents, the governor tasked the Commission  to collaborate with his government to enable it reap due revenue from Vehicle Number Plate, Registration and License renewals.

  Earlier, the  Corps Marshal  Oyeyemi had  told  Orji of the FRSC’s offer to train Abia traffic officers at the agency’s training  school at Udi in Enugu State.

 In a chat with journalists , Oyeyemi  who said his Commission fully complies with the court ruling that there would be no deadline for change to new vehicle number plates , however  urged vehicle owners to effect the change to the new plates when they go to renew their  driver’s  licenses and expired  vehicle documents.

 His words:” We will  continue to abide by the court ruling. It was a case of double taxation to compel motorists to procure  the new one when other documents had not expired. There is no deadline at present on new number plate procurement”.

 He however warned  those that operate with  fake number plates or driver’s license saying they risk being  prosecuted and  vowed that FRSC would not back down on the June 1st , 2015 deadline for the  enforcement  of  the speed limit device .
