Taraba State Governor, Darius Dickson Ishaku, has expressed concern over incessant conflicts between the Tiv community in Benue State and Jukun community in Wukari Council of the state.

The governor, who expressed sadness over the recent crisis between the two ethnic groups in Kente village of Wukari council, yesterday, said he could not fathom why the two communities continue to take up arms against themselves.

The latest of such conflict, which occurred in Kente, a border community in Taraba State, had led to wanton destruction of lives and property.

The governor said he had been having sleepovers nights over the conflict, disclosing that his government and the Benue State government, were fine-tuning ways to permanently put an end to the ugly development.

In a statement made available to journalists through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Matters, Bala Dan Abu, Ishaku condemned the degeneration of a minor conflict between a Jukum person and a Tiv person into a bitter conflict leading to some casualties.

He urged residents of the border communities to live together in peace and harmony in order to attract government amenities that would make life easier for them.

He noted that frequent conflicts “can only lead to disruption of economic activities and aggravate poverty and hunger”, adding that, “as neighbours, the two groups need each other for economic survival.”

Meanwhile, the council chairman of Wukari, Adi Daniel, had confirmed that no fewer than 15 persons from the two communities lost their lives during the latest fracas.
