His appointment was announced by the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the end of December 2022. Mlynár has succeeded Victor Kisob of Cameroon.

With nearly 30 years of experience in senior assignments focused on international organizations, development cooperation, humanitarian aid, and Africa, Mr. Mlynár is well-positioned to help UN-Habitat further its mission of promoting sustainable urban development and adequate housing for all.
