Hyve Group plc, the organisers of Investing in African Mining Indaba (Mining Indaba) (https://MiningIndaba.com/), can share the recent news that Mpho Makwana, current Chair of the Mining Indaba Advisory Board, was appointed as Non-Executive Chair, Nedbank Group Ltd, on 2 December 2021.  Given this development, Mpho has decided to step down as Chair of the Mining Indaba Advisory Board with immediate effect. Mpho has served the Mining Indaba board with superb leadership and distinction over the last five years, overseeing the transition of Mining Indaba from previous ownership to Hyve Group plc. Mpho has been a tremendous ambassador for Mining Indaba and the South African business sector as a whole throughout these years. He has steered the Advisory Board through the year-on-year growth of the event, which is now the world’s largest mining investment gathering.

Hyve Group will continue to warmly welcome Mpho to Mining Indaba where he will, no doubt, share his expertise in future Mining Indaba editions’ dialogues on ESG, climate transition finance and leadership from the podium, and we would like to offer our unequivocal thanks and best wishes to Mpho as he begins this latest chapter in his distinguished career. In consultation with the Mining Indaba Advisory Board, Hyve Group is delighted to announce that the new Chair of the Advisory Board is Mr Frans Baleni, appointed immediately. Frans will ensure the seamless continuity and leadership of the Advisory Board’s priorities in collaboration with Ms Noluthando Gosa, Mr Anthony Carroll, Mr Simon Ford, and Mr Tom Quinn who will support, as head of content for Mining Indaba, Mr Baleni as Co-Chair of the Advisory Board.

Simon Ford, Portfolio Director at Hyve Group, stated, “On behalf of myself, the Mining Indaba team and the collective industry, we extend a heartfelt thank you to Mpho for his fantastic contribution to the event’s success over so many years. Biographies:

Mr Frans Msokoli Baleni is a former Deputy Chairperson on the Board of the Development Bank of Southern Africa and a Member of the Council at the University of Johannesburg. Frans serves on numerous public and private-sector boards encompassing Mining, Energy and Forestry, and he is a board director with F11 Management Consulting. As a board member, Frans brings sound commercial, risk, governance and compliance skills together with his expertise in mining, health and safety, government relations, education and training, energy sector, stakeholder management and collective bargaining processes.

Frans is the past General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), South Africa’s trade union, where he was voted into the role in 2006. He started his career in the mining industry in 1979 and was elected a Shop Steward a year later. In 1988, he became Branch Chairman at the Western Holdings Mine in Welkom. Frans then joined the NUM and held various posts until his election in 2006 as General Secretary. Frans has also served as the Chairman of the Mineworkers Investment Trust. He was a United Democratic Front activist and was later involved in the negotiations at the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA).

Mr P Mpho Makwana is an accomplished business leader with diverse experience spanning a period of more than three decades in executive and C-Suite roles in the public and private sectors. He is currently Non-executive Chairman – Nedbank Group Ltd (NDBKF.PK), Nedbank Ltd, and Independent Non-Executive Chairman of JSE-listed ArcelorMittal South Africa Limited. Furthermore, he serves as Chairman of SAFCOL SOC Limited (State Forestry SOC) and family-owned business Epitome Investments (Pty) Ltd.

He is also Chairman of Boardroom Alliance (Pty) Ltd – which holds the sub-Saharan trading license for Executive Search firm Heidrick & Struggles. Non-Executive Director BioTherm Energy (PTY) Ltd; one of South Africa’s foremost renewable energy companies. He also volunteers as a Member of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Fund’s Fund-Raising Committee and is a Trustee on of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund board. In April 2016, he was one of 14 trustees appointed by HE The President of the Republic of SA, to serve as a Trustee on the Board of Trustees of BRAND SA. During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Mpho led the team that kept the lights on; firstly, as Interim Chairman & CEO (3rdQ 2009) and as Chairman of Eskom Holdings Limited SOC from 10 June 2010 until his term as Director concluded on 27 June 2011, after serving on that board for nine years. Qualifications: Bachelor of Administration (B.Admin) University of Zululand, B.Admin (University of Pretoria), EDP, Kellogg School of Management and Post. Grad Diploma, Retailing Management, University of Stirling.
