Japan will dispatch 20 personnel from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) and 1 program liaison and coordination officer from the Secretariat of the International Peace Cooperation Headquarters, Cabinet Office to the training under the UN Triangular Partnership Programme (TPP), which is implemented by the UN Department of Operational Support. The training which will take place in Kenya from January 19th to March 15th 2022 aims to instruct engineering personnel from African countries on the operation of heavy engineering equipment.

The TPP is a framework for cooperation among the United Nations, supporting member states including Japan, and troop-contributing countries of UN peacekeeping to address the issue of insufficient capacity and skills of peacekeeping personnel. Since Japan announced its support at the First Leaders’ Summit on Peacekeeping held at the UN Headquarters in 2014, it has been supporting the realization of high quality peacekeeping activities by building the necessary capacity for early deployment of peacekeeping operations. In particular, Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) has contributed to the promotion of the TPP by dispatching JSDF personnel and others as instructors to conduct engineering training for peacekeeping personnel in African and Asian countries.

Since 2015, the training has been conducted in Africa and Asia. This is the 13th time including trial training. Japan dispatched 240 JGSDF personnel and other individuals to the trainings, and trained 333 engineering personnel from Africa, Asia, and the surrounding regions.
