Analyst tasks government on youth entrepreneurship for economic development

To reengineer Nigeria’s economic situation and reposition the country as the true leader of Africa, the Federal Government has been urged to review school’s curriculum, and mobilise support for entrepreneurship education programme focused on the youth with adequate funding.

The Guest Speaker, Michael Ibenu Junior, who spoke on, “Skill and Knowledge: the Driving Force to Economic Development,” decried the commitment of Nigerian youth to skill labour, which he described as abysmal, and consequently has been fuelling poverty in Africa’s most populous nation.

Ibenu, who spoke at the Earn-Power Meet-up Event, organised by Dakoru Voice International, therefore urged the youth to get involved in entrepreneurship empowerment programmes.

This will remind them of the concept and purpose of entrepreneurship education and empowerment, challenges facing entrepreneurship as well as youth empowerment in Nigeria, which possess the capacity to liberate them from poverty currently embroiling almost half of Nigeria’s 200 million people.

Agreeing that Nigeria’s population is estimated to rise by more than double its current size according to a U.S. projection, the guest speaker hinged the problem of lack of capacity to move the country forward on strategic skills acquisition that could ultimately turn it around in not too distant future.

“One of the ways in which the problem can be resolved is that people should be able to perceive problems, including societal problems as challenges and opportunities that can be turned into goods and services of commercial value. This is the main approach to achieving the contending and outstanding problem facing the country today,” he said.

Stressing the advantage of entrepreneurship on globalised economy worldwide as a result of job creation, empowerment for the unemployed and the underemployed, he linked the challenges hindering entrepreneurship education in Nigeria to poor entrepreneurial culture, lack of fund, poor knowledge-based economy.

Others are low spirit of competition, lack of entrepreneurial teachers, materials and equipment, non-inclusion of entrepreneurship practical programmes in the school curriculum, poor societal attitude to technical and vocational education development among others.

Ibenu argued that since the wheel of development of any country can be premised on youth’s creativity, parents, teachers as well as the government, are obliged to ensure that youths are empowered with skills, and knowledge and that would make them become self-reliant, rather than emphasising on certificates.

To move the nation forward, he strongly advocated curriculum review, sensitisation, advocacy and mobilisation of support for entrepreneurship education and funding with unequivocal political will on the part of both the government and policymakers.
