The newly-constituted administration of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Anambra State council, led by Humphrey Nwafor, has pledged to approach the state government on the implementation of minimum wage.

The emergence of the new leadership followed the vacancy created in the leadership of the council with the retirement from the state civil service in September last year of the immediate past chairman, Jerry Nnubia, whose tenure would have ended in April 2014.

To fill the vacancy, a bye-election was conducted at the NLC secretariat and the returning officer, Jude Igwebuike, declared Nwafor elected unopposed as the new chairman of NLC in the state to complete the 13-month outstanding tenure of Nnubia.

Inaugurating the Nwafor-led team, Igwebuike said the election of the new chairman of NLC was done in line with the NLC constitution, which provides that on retirement, the occupant of the NLC position (Nnubia) ceases to hold any position and this was made applicable to Nnubia, whose seat was declared vacant on his retirement from Anambra State Government Service.

Speaking on the occasion, the new NLC chairman, Nwafor, expressed immense gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and promised to run an all-inclusive leadership.

He also assured the workers in the state that he would adopt approaches that would lead to the implementation of the new minimum wage by the state government.

Both the Trade Union Congress (TUC), led by Chris Ogbonna and the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC) chairman in the state, Edith Onwuka, congratulated the new NLC chairman, saying he is experienced and should be able to deliver on the mandate.
