Delta reiterates commitment to youth empowerment schemes

Delta State has reiterated its commitment to maintain qualitative technical and vocational education for the empowerment of youths.Speaking recently at the 2017 Technical and Vocational Fair competition and Project exhibition, where Issele-Uku Technical College emerged tops to win N300, 000, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. David Onokpe, said the main purpose of the competition was for the participants to showcase their creative skills so far acquired through the project exhibitions.

While appreciating the World Bank/EU assisted project through SEEFOR intervention programmes in the state-owned technical colleges and vocational centres, Onokpe said no meaningful development could be achieved by any nation without sound and qualitative technical education and vocational skill.

He stressed that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is committed repositioning the six technical colleges and several vocational centres across the state in order to equip youths with the requisite skills in making them entrepreneurs and employers of labour.

In the same vein, the Chairman, Planning Committee of the exhibition, Ikem Smart, said that the themes for this years’ technical and vocational fair and exhibition is ‘Fabrication of flour milling machines for bread production as a panacea for sustainable economy; and ‘PromotinVCCVVg African culture through bead and fabric making’ were tailored for the six participating technical colleges and three vocational centres.

Meanwhile, the Project Coordinator, Delta SEEFOR, Mr. Benson Ojoko, identified technical education as bedrock of development of any nation, explained that the state went into collaboration with the World Bank and the European Union to create an enabling environment, build capacity and provide starter packs for the participants.
