Plans are underway by the Lagos State chapter of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN) to have a partnership scheme with the Lagos State Government in ensuring that selected schools in local governments areas are given lectures on corporate governance.

Newly inaugurated Chairman, ICSAN, Lagos State chapter, Olufemi Sokan, said this in his acceptance speech, during his investiture as the 11th chairman of the chapter over the weekend.

The move, he said, will help drive home to the younger ones that no society could achieve or attain greatness without good governance and proper strategies in place.

He said the theme ‘Bracing up for the Journey’, would be a journey that would be characterised by guidance, wisdom and courage, as well as building on the existing pillars of the chapters’ pursuits, despite all challenges that may be encountered on the way.

Speaking on other areas, which his administration would focus on, he said, there would be improved welfare of members through new initiatives. He said some of the initiatives will be to assist members, especially upcoming ones to enjoy the benefits of internship.

Sokan, who promised to enhance capacity of members, said it would give the upcoming ones opportunity to participate in packaged governance programmes. He said the chapter would equally execute an impactful mentorship programme to help young members grow.

While pledging to ensure a better visibility of the chapter, he said he’ll work assiduously with the executives to increase funding for the chapter. Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Olalere Odusote, who hinted that the state plans to enhance governance in the public sector, disclosed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has put measures to improve accountability and transparency in the public service.

The keynote speaker, Prof. Femi Olufumilade, urged the institute to deploy governance tenets to tackle areas of corruption, insecurity and the economy. He advised the new chairman to provide result-driven leadership as seen in his readiness to serve on the basis of international best practices and in sync with corporate governance principles.

Immediate past chairman of the chapter, Nkechi Anyimah, expressed confidence in Sokan’s ability to move the chapter and the institute to greater heights.
