LCCI empowers young entrepreneurs with requisite skills
The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has empowered over 40 young and aspiring entrepreneurs with the requisite skills required to be competitive in the local and foreign business world.
Indeed, the President, LCCI, Alhaji Remi Bello, explained the need to empower young entrepreneurs to become future business leaders, saying that the move by the chamber was to preach the gospel of youth self-employment rather than look for white collar jobs in the country.
The LCCI boss during the graduation ceremony of the 2015 edition of the LCCI mentoring programme scheme 3, said the programme is looking ahead to the future and the need for the Organised Private Sector (OPS) to support young entrepreneurs and their enterprises to improve their survival rate after start-up.
He added that these enterprises must be given business support and developmental services to increase their chances of developing from small to medium sized and from medium sized into large companies, thus creating the next generation of fortune-500 companies in Nigeria.
“Any programme without the involvement of youth will definitely perish and we do not want our youth to go into extinction in this country. We want to develop and prepare the leaders that would take over from us. We want the young entrepreneurs to network with those we can call models, who will also share their life experiences to help the upcoming entrepreneurs surmount challenges they are likely to face growing their businesses,” he said.
He however called on the government to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive; pointing out that this is one surest way of creating employment opportunities in the country.
“My advise to the government is to create what we have been clamouring for, an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. If the business environment is created and business thrives, the citizenry will be better for it because employment generation will be created and if this happen, the government would have fulfilled one of its cardinal objectives,” he said.
He added that the mentoring programme therefore was created to serve as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of the chamber aimed at contributing meaningfully to the development of the nation’s teeming unemployed youth and also to make them responsible to themselves, families and to the nation.
“This is in addition to the chamber’s objectives of promoting and protecting the interest of its members and the business community at large through public advocacy, creation and facilitation of commercial and industrial opportunities, provision of business development services and observation of highest standards of business ethics.
Also speaking the event, the Vice President and Chairman, Board of Business Education, Services and Training Unit (BEST), Mrs. Toki Mabogunje, said ever since the pilot mentoring programme in 2013, the initiative have been very successful with many mentees improving tremendously in their businesses.
