Monkeypox: Five more victims discharged in Bayelsa

Five people earlier quarantined at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), Okolobiri have been discharged.

The new development brings the figure to seven, including the medical doctor and the index person out of the 11 persons isolated at the teaching hospital since the outbreak of the disease in Bayelsa State.

In a statement yesterday in Yenagoa, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said two of the index cases and the medic affected by the disease were discharged from the hospital following their full recovery few days ago.

He said the others, currently under strict supervision, were responding to treatment. According to him, government could beat its chest to say it had been able to successfully contain the spread of the disease as no new case has been reported in the last few days.”

Giving an update on the infectious disease, Iworiso-Markson observed that “with the way and manner the government deployed its machinery and with the team of dedicated health and medical personnel, monkey pox ‎will soon be fully kicked out of Bayelsa State.”

He commended the Ministry of Health and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) ‎for their efforts in the fight against the disease.

The commissioner also lauded the residents for their cooperation, especially adherence to the preventive measures.

He urged them to step up efforts by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and hygiene by wash their hands regularly and avoiding contacts with monkey and other bush animals.
