NAOC trains 280 seafarers to boost maritime manpower

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the Nigeria Agip Oil Company Limited (NAOC) in collaboration with its Joints Venture (JV) partners has offered to train no fewer than 280 youths from its host communities as seafarers.

Vice Chairman/Managing Director of NAOC, Massiomo Insulla, said this inaugurating the training programme at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) Oron, Akwa Ibom State. Represented by John Nwenedah, he stressed that the objective of the training programme was to building capacity in the maritime industry.

Describing the gesture as the first of its kind by the company and its partners, he noted that the training of the seafarers would help increase the country’s manpower aboard vessels in line with the Cabotage Act.

“Prior to now, NAOC had trained, empowered and equipped youths from its host communities in woodwork, wielding and fabrication, hairdressing, fashion design, computer training, catering and event management.

“Since 1999, the JVs has trained and empowered over 3,750 youths in the various skills and also provided them with starter packs and start up funds. “The seafarers training programme was birthed as a thought, which NAOC undertook to work on. We are, therefore, proud to make history today,” he said.

The programme, he added, would help to bridge the manpower gap in the marine sub-sector of the country’s economy, stressing that, it was dedicated to train young graduates from the host communities, adding that the skills and certification that would be acquired would enable them gain employment in the marine industry.

He, therefore, charged the trainees to show determination and commitment throughout the six months of their training and also urged them to be good ambassador of their respective communities.

The trainees were draw from Bayelsa, Delta, Imo and Rivers states. The Acting Rector of MAN Oron, Ante Mkpandiok Mkpandiok, noted that the Academy, as the premier maritime institution in the country, has always lived up to its responsibilities of training cadets in within and outside the country.

He thanked the management of NAOC and the JV partners for choosing the Academy to train 180 out of the 280 seafarers, promising that the academy would live up to expectations.
