NAOWA empowers 225 Borno IDPs with skills, starter packs

The Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) has empowered 225 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and widows of fallen heroes with skills and distribution of starter packs for the take-off their respective businesses in Borno state.

The Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) has empowered 225 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and widows of fallen heroes with skills and distribution of starter packs for the take-off their respective businesses in Borno state.

The association has also commissioned the 7 Division NAOWA nursery schools with the foundation lying of a model college.Presenting the starter packs on recently at the Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, President of NAOWA, Mrs Ummu Kalthum Buratai disclosed that the empowerment initiatives of the association was aimed at addressing the challenges of displaced persons from their homes and places of work.

She said that peace has been achieved and pray that all the displaced persons will return to their communities and continue with their business and other social activities.

Mrs Buratai said the effective utilization of acquired skills of IDPs; could rejuvenate the economy in boosting commercial activities in rural areas of the state.

Her words: “I’m happy to announce that 225 IDPs and widows of our fallen heroes have been trained in lucrative skills among which 20 participants were trained in catering, 75 in cosmetics, 23 in cosmetology, and 21 in paint POP making. Others include 16 received training in vulcanizing, 18 in knitting, 10 in tie and dye, 20 in interior decoration and 17 got trained in beads making.”She said the empowerment initiative would be sustained by targeting the youths affected by Boko Haram insurgency.

“This will actualize the economic potentials of the affected displaced persons in camps and host communities. The youths should shun idleness and engaged in self-employed entrepreneurial ventures. It is the only way to address unemployment and poverty in our society,” said Mrs. Buratai.

She reminded parents not to relent in monitoring and teaching the younger ones on good moral behaviours and fear of God, adding that they should be security conscious of their environment by providing useful information to security agencies.

On the commissioned nursery school, President of NAOWA 7 Division chapter, Mrs Appolonia Ezugwu said that the patronage of the school with student enrolment of 74 pupils from serving military personnel and civilians is an evidence of return of peace.
