To absorb Breweries workers into civil service

The Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has said that his administration’s zero tolerance for waste in the civil service and new format for revenue generation has boosted the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in nine pilot locations in Oredo local government area by more than 500 percent .

He said his insistence on the collection of revenue by trusted government officials has proven that the state could get more through direct engagement of workers rather than using agents or political associates. The governor stated this recently while addressing workers, pointing out that in his 2017 New Year speech, he outlawed the activities of non-state actors in the state, while promising that payment of taxes and revenue would be paid electronically.

In the interim, he granted workers in the state a tax leave until the modalities for the electronic technology, which includes e-payment, Point of Sales (POS) terminals and purchase of tax vouchers had been put in place.

He said that nine locations in Oredo local government area being used as pilot scheme for new implementation policy which before now remits N42,000 a day  climbed to N500,000 daily.

Obaseki added that his administration was determined to correct the ills of the past and not create new ones, insisting that his administration had not banned the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) from collecting dues and levies from its members in the state.

He explained further that the technology was being test run and the union would start collecting levies from its members via electronic payment before the end of May.

In a related development, the governor said the administration is considering absorbing workers of the comatose Bendel Breweries into the state civil service while responding to entreaties by members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to provide succour to the workers, whose affairs were in limbo due to the stagnated affairs of the breweries.

He said that he would not use the state’s funds to revive the breweries, but he would instead withdraw the state workers from the breweries and absorb them in the state civil service.

“Do you want me to use taxpayers’ money and settle the debts of Bendel Breweries where people have stolen so much from? I will not do that. I will rather take out all our workers there and absorb them in the civil service and then they will get their salaries and pensions promptly and regularly.“If investors will not invest in the breweries, I will fold up the company,” he added.
