NIM plans review of operations to woo blue-chip firms

Olukunle Iyanda

The Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) Chartered is set to review its operations and programmed with a view to woo blue chip firms back to its fold, the 21st President and Chairman of Council, Prof Olukunle Iyanda, has said.

Besides, in pursuit of management excellence upgrading the image and reputation of the Institute, Iyanda disclosed that it has concluded plans to make needed changes where necessary.

While delivering its inaugural address in Lagos, Iyanda, said the history of the Institute in its formative years is the history of Nigeria’s blue-chip companies, which were its corporate members and its financial backbone.

According to him, the relationship between the Institute and corporate bodies was strong, cordial and mutually beneficial that most of the Institute’s projects and activities were partly financed by them.  In return, the Institute provided management training for the young and middle management staff of the corporate members.

“We seem to have lost some of this collaboration and mutually beneficial relationship. We plan to woo back leading companies and restore them to the centre of the Institute’s activities and governance,” he said.He explained that top of the agenda in its public advocacy is to sponsor and conduct research into some of the management problems confronting the country.

“We intend to review our professional examination curriculum, update the content, increase its relevance and rigour, and bring it up to speed with what obtains in similar institutes across the world,” he added.Iyanda said the implementation of this plan will be swift and immediate as a committee to be made up of seasoned professional management educators and practitioners will be set up soonest to carry out this assignment.

In order to achieve the set objectives, he said the importance of cooperation, motivation and commitment of the Institute’s management and staff and indeed of all members of the Institute, cannot be overemphasized. He said management and staff have the sole responsibility of implementing the policies and decisions of Council and making the institute work seamlessly. In this respect, the 21st president said the institute will encourage, motivate and reward excellence in service while incompetence, dishonesty, fraud, indolence, truancy and every other form of unethical workplace practices would similarly be rewarded appropriately.

Earlier in his speech, the guest speaker, Dr. Udo Udo-Aka, congratulated NIM for its pioneering role in management training and development in Nigeria for over half a century, saying there is need for effective leadership in the country.
