As a way out of the high unemployment rate in the country, Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has flagged-off the 2016 cycle of his administration’s job creation scheme.

The programme was flagged-off at Amukpe, Sapele Local Council. The governor said during the initial programme, a total of 17,173 private sector jobs of both skilled and unskilled workers were created through projects, policies and programmes out of which 6,800 were direct jobs while 10,373 were indirect jobs, of both skilled and unskilled workers.

The programme includes Skill Training and Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP), Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs Programme (YAGEP), and Graduate Employment Enhancement Programme (GEEP).

Speaking on recently at the flag-off at the Songhai-Delta training centre, Okowa explained that securing jobs in the public service has become very difficult because of the high number of graduates chasing the few opportunities available.

He noted that that people should acquire relevant skills to be self-sufficient and become employers of labour.

He said: “We are training you to become job creators that we need in Delta State, you are here to improve on your lives and be in a position to be employers of labour. I believe that you are going to step into a greater future. I want to see you as better Deltans, Deltans who will say, I have been able to create jobs for myself and jobs for others.

Reiterating the determination of his administration to continue with the programme, Okowa advised the participants to be committed as it was capable of turning them to job creators.

The Chief Job Creation Officer in the state, Prof. Eric Eboh said that as proof of growing stakeholders’ confidence in the job creation scheme, international development partners and non-governmental organizations have intensified technical support and collaboration for training, monitoring, service delivery feedback and mentoring.
