The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has urged the Economic Advisory Council (ECA) to come up with an economic recovery and growth roadmap that would salvage the economy.
The union also urged the council to design recovery plans that would curtail the global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on Nigerians.
A communique issued at the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held recently in Akwa Ibom State, called on the government to intensify efforts towards stimulating the economy.
The communique, which was signed by its President, Festus Osifo, and General Secretary, Lumumba Okugbawa, urged the government to devise crucial strategies that would address identified bottlenecks that hinder the productivity of the economy and job creation.
Among other issues, the NEC-in-Session commended the government for the re-opening of the nation’s land borders for the free flow of goods and services.
It urged agencies and security organisations vested with the responsibilities of manning the borders to be professional in the discharge of their duties.
Concerned about the worsening security situation in the country, the NEC–In-Session said Nigeria needed urgent overhauling with a focus on intelligence gathering and review of military strategies.
The body called on the President Muhammadu Buhari to put to an end insecurity lapse, noting that the primary essence of any government was the protection of lives and property of the citizens.
While commending Federal Government’s effort towards commencing rehabilitation on refineries, the association promised not to relent until the refineries are brought back onstream, without compromise on safety, quality, schedule, and cost.
At the meeting, a public session was dedicated primarily to enlighten NEC members on the Petroleum Industrial Bill (PIB), the Nigerian Gas Initiative, and the role of the association with regards to the PIB and the gas initiative.
