Female Artists Association of Nigeria (FAAN), Southwest zone, in collaboration with Yaba College of Technology, is set to hold its maiden exhibition at Yusuf Grillo gallery, Yaba Tech, Lagos. The exhibition that involves 18 participating members of the association is expected to run from August 18 through September 1. It is titled Art-titude.

Coordinator of the zone, Omovo Ayoola Oluwaseun, said the exhibition would show the love and leadership role of women in society, adding, “People always feel serious women are not into art, but we have doctors, lecturers among us. We want people to love, read and value art, so that someday, art can be found in every home.

“Though the appreciation of the artworks of women is low because some people still believe women should only be in the kitchen. We are grateful to the few collectors, who appreciate our works; they realise that the few of us out there are doing fantastic work in the scene. We want people to come and have a feel of what we do, and be convinced that women in the arts are doing well and should not be sidelined.”

Also, General Secretary of the zone, Elizabeth Omolara Adenugba, believes that the exhibiting platform would provide female artists the opportunity to showcase and share their works and make them available to the world.

According to her, the national body of the association had mandated all zones to create activities that would engage and encourage members, noting, “It is in this light that we are organising this maiden edition of the exhibition to further strengthen the national body’s resolve. These activities would range from seminars, exhibitions, workshops and so on. Subsequently, we will organise workshops for female children.”

Shedding more light on the theme, Art-titude, Adenugba said, “Women are very versatile, and we hope to project the attitude of women towards their chosen careers through our works. Some of the works that will be on display touch on national issues, celebrate womanhood, the girl child and so on.”

Adenugba, who is also known as Clara Aden is a pencilist, an illustrator. She stated, “My own entries feature ‘Mother and child,’ ‘Zero hunger,’ ‘Girl child,’ their patience, and attitude towards work.

“We are holding it at Yaba College of Technology mostly because the school was graceful to allow us use it, and to encourage us.”
