After a successful debut show in South Africa, the renowned Nigerian artist, Ayogu Kingsley, is set for a return to the Rainbow Nation, this time, to unveil an extension of his acclaimed series, Icons In The White House, at the prestigious FNB Joburg Art Fair.
His debut in South Africa art space was at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair. Through his remarkable body of work, Ayogu has captured the global art landscape with his profound and contemplative exploration of black consciousness.
In his Icons of the White House series, Ayogu imagines significant historical, societal, and political figures as the President of the United States (POTUS).
The 16th edition of the fair will showcase his outstanding artistic talent and his latest masterpieces, including, the captivating portrait of the late Winnie Mandela, in which he demonstrates his commitment to portraying not just the physical likeness, but also the underlying essence and spirit of these individuals.
At the core of Ayogu’s creative vision lies an exploration of black consciousness, a thematic thread that seeks to redefine the very essence of blackness—not merely as a skin colour but as a profound mindset, a sovereign form of self-governance, and a resounding assertion of authority.
His artistic oeuvre delves into historical gaps and omissions that have marginalised black voices, passionately challenging ingrained narratives within institutional spheres.
“Because my work is visual, I like to give young Africans, heroes to look up to. My work is to erase the constructs that have made us perceive ourselves as pawns in a chess game,” says Ayogu, highlighting his commitment to empowering the African narrative.
Centred on themes such as, Joy and Celebration, Repose, Sensuality, Spirituality, Triumph and Liberation, Ayogu’s work is a revelation that tears down barriers of perception and challenges viewers to confront the ideas that have long reduced Africans to the role of pawns in a vast social chess game.
According to him, the exhibition is not just about art—it’s a conversation, a statement, and a celebration of the enduring power of black consciousness.
In an open invitation that extends to art aficionados, collectors, and enthusiasts alike, Ayogu tells the general public to traverse the captivating tapestry of his artwork at the FNB Joburg Art Fair from September 8 to 10 at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg.
Born in Enugu, Ayogu’s artistic journey began at a young age. His early aptitude for art led him to create works for local politicians during his specialised secondary schooling, where he obtained his Trade Test in Painting and Decorating. In 2017, he graduated from Enugu State College of Education with a National Certificate in Education in Fine and Applied Art Education.
His career as a professional artist began when he moved to Lagos, and it has been distinguished by his mastery of the hyperrealist technique using oil on canvas.
