With recognition that creativity is the process of developing ideas that are original and of value, school managers and parents across the country have been advised to support children’s interest in the arts.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of a three-day Corona Schools Art Exhibition, held recently at Corona School, Gbagada, as part of activities to mark the 60th anniversary of the school, Vice Principal (Pastoral), Corona Secondary School, Agbara, Mr. Paul Obah, said parents should support their children to develop their artistic ability, since art brings about originality in every individual.

He said unlike before when art was erroneously perceived as an unserious business for unserious people, art today has gained immense recognition owing to its numerous benefits to societal development and mankind.

Obah who is also an artist, said, “People are learning and are beginning to appreciate art unlike before. Today, we have many more people who are successful artists. So parents should encourage their children who are art-inclined or have interest in any branch of creative activities. We are proud to celebrate the talents of our pupils as exhibited here, and the values that Corona has brought forth over the years”.

The exhibition, themed ‘Support Children’s Art,’ had a collection of works from Apapa School, Victoria Island, Gbagada, Ikoyi, Lekki and the secondary arm of the school. It featured mosaic works, pencil drawings, paintings, collages, sculptures, textile designs and crafts.

A parent and an alumnus of the school, Mrs. Yanju Olowodola, remarked that the world has now become innovative and dynamic, thus the need for parents and school administrators to guide children in developing their artistic ability and other skills through extra curricular activities.

An art teacher of the school, Mr. Charles Okafor, said good knowledge of arts does not only complement learning but also enables children to express and bring their imagination to life. He, therefore, advised parents to offer guidance and support for their children as they have imagination and ideas waiting to be explored.
