THIS Sunday, January 25, 2015, at Atlantic Hall, Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Fr. Uwem Akpan, author of acclaimed fictional account of plight of children on the African continent, Say You’re One of Them, will be guest author at Rainbow Book Club. Time is 3pm.

Akpan’s cerebral collective of short stories that also made Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club in 2009, when it was published, is Book of The Month of rainbow Book Club. Fr. Akpan will also hold interactive session with book enthusiasts. The programme is also part of World Book Capital activities for which Port Harcourt has been host since last year, but which comes to an end in April when the city hands over to Incheon, South Korea Republic.

In his response from his U.S. base, Fr. Akpan expressed delight at the opportunity to read again in his homeland after being away for some time now. According to him, “I am very honoured that my book was picked for the year-long festivities of the Port Harcourt World Book Capital festivities. First of all, I congratulate Koko Kalango for all she has done for the reading culture in Nigeria. It’s always nice to do public reading in Nigeria. In my experience, the questions and comments are usually quite direct”.

A critical review of Say You’re One of Them comments, “…This singular collection takes the reader inside Nigeria, Benin, Kenya, Rwanda and Ethiopia, revealing in beautiful prose the harsh consequences for children of life in Africa”.
