A GROUP of entertainment celebrities from film, music, comedy, writing and media under the aegis of Saving Life for Africa Foundation (SLAD) has announced President Goodluck Jonathan as its 2014 Personality of the Year. This is as a result of the proactive way the government fought and conquered the deadly Ebola scourge, which hit Nigeria last year.

The group responsible for the Nollywood Health Convention, which is in its fourth edition, stated that Jonathan is being honoured for the prompt way his government through the Ministry of Health tackled the problem of Ebola which was a huge source of worry in 2014 in the country. According to the leader of the group, Obi Madubogwu, actor and director, said after careful evaluation of the impact of such victory felt the honour should deservedly go to Mr. President.

He said, “In SLAD, our primary concern is to draw attention to certain health issues with our celebrity status. During the 2014 edition of Nollywood Health Convention, the issue of Ebola Virus came up and we arrived at the conclusion that it was one of the greatest health issues in sub-Saharan Africa. While there are a lot of other issues confronting the nation, SLAD thinks the issue of Ebola would have wiped out Nigerians had there been no instant containment response. While it is a thing of joy that we were able to conquer this scourge, we also deem it fit to recognise those who played very pivotal roles in making us overcome this. The President comes tops because the team he leads was proactive. At least, we need to be alive to begin to enjoy the dividends of democracy. So, we are honouring the President for making sure that Ebola did not wipe out Nigerians”.

One of the partners of SLAD, Uju Ohanenye (Kenuj Shower of Love Foundation) praised the selfless efforts of SLAD, saying, “I got interested in their activities because of the selfless nature of their campaigns. For us at Kenuj, there is nothing heartwarming than seeing these celebrities using their status in the service of humanity. I wish a lot more of our celebrities will embrace this attitude”.

SLAD, which draws its membership from the entertainment industry, has received a lot of support from dignitaries like the chairman of Chisco Group, Chidi Anyaegbu and Sir Nnamdi Nwigwe.
