In new show, Aina, Tete-Katchan interrogate colours and cubes

In the contemporary art scene, styles may seem to be on the spotlight, however, the need to ask certain questions such as, ‘Is there a narrative or story to the work? Does the work communicate an idea or feeling? Is there an underlying theme to the work? Does the work have its own unique interpretation?’

These, and many more, are mostly what goes through the mind of a proper art audience, and most importantly, what an artist should try to interrogate in every art piece.

In their new show, titled, Colours and Cubes, which opened at the Alexis Galleries on Akin Olugbade, Victoria Island, Lagos Samuel Tete-Katchan and Felix Aina try to infuse this understanding in their works.

Aina, an impressionist painter, who has been able to create and achieve his own trend and style of mixed media with colourful impasto, interrogates ‘Colour’ in a manner that is very intriguing and peculiar, judging by his bold application of vibrant colours and textured surface that gives a special uniqueness to his rendition.

‘Cubes’, however, is coined from Tete’s rendition of his figures, which clearly has its own narrative. Tete- Katchan paints to celebrate geometrical forms and colours. Although the squares look like they do not have the right angles and same sizes, you can still see the images so clearly.

According to the gallery’s curator, Patty Chidiac-Mastrogiannis, the place of colours and cubes in artistic conversation is what has informed the narrative, which Aina and Tete- Katchan have reflected in the show. “The gallery recognises the uniqueness in style and rendition of ideas by these artists, hence the birth of ‘Colours and Cubes’.”

The joint exhibition of painting and mixed media will be opened to the public live till November 21, 2020 — 10:00am-6:00pm (daily). The exhibition virtual tour has been published on the gallery’s social media handles: instagram-a alexisgalleries, facebook- Thehomestores Alexisgalleries.

Chidiac-Mastrogiannis also said that the gallery would be partnering with Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria, by donating part of the show’s proceeds to its course.
