SnappCode Academy’s “The Light You Carry” training program empowers young creatives, expands charity efforts

SnappCode Academy, led by renowned photographer and filmmaker Ifeoluwa Babalola, also known as Snappcode of Africa, is currently hosting its highly anticipated two-week intensive training program on photography and videography, titled “The Light You Carry.”

The program, which began on March 3rd and will run until March 15th, 2025, features a lineup of industry professionals, guest speakers, and mentors providing valuable insights into the creative industry. Some of the notable speakers include Kola Oshalusi, Dax, Victor Adesewa, Dave Elvis, Nnanna Ali, Sunky O, Teminikan, Ifan, and Blessing Abeng, among others.

Speaking on the motivation behind the initiative, Babalola emphasized the need for mentorship in the creative space, recalling his own struggles as a young photographer. “When I was coming up, I didn’t have mentors to show us the way. That’s why I came up with this initiative, which is more or less free. The funds we raise from these sessions go towards our foundation, which focuses on sponsoring children’s education and community projects like boreholes,” he explained.

As part of the foundation’s long-term goals, Babalola revealed plans to build 100 boreholes within five years and send at least 10,000 children to school within a decade. Since launching the borehole project last year, they have successfully completed one in Atan, Ogun State, and their next target is Makoko in Lagos, with expansion plans for other states.

His commitment to philanthropy stems from a personal experience. “Growing up, my family had money until we didn’t anymore, but my parents wanted me to continue receiving a quality education. In my final year of secondary school, the owner of my school wrote off my fees. From that moment, I promised God and myself that when I have money, I will give back. Every year, I dedicate 30% of my earnings to charity,” he shared.

The event has also featured discussions on branding and communication strategies for creatives. Branding expert Blessing Abeng encouraged students to be intentional about their personal and business brands. “I spoke about approaching branding from both personal and business perspectives. My advice to them is to avoid the ‘fake it till you make it’ mentality. Instead, acknowledge where you are, set goals, and take small, actionable steps towards them,” she advised.

With The Light You Carry still ongoing and already making a significant impact on aspiring creatives, SnappCode Academy continues to bridge the gap between skill acquisition and community development. The initiative is shaping a new generation of photographers and videographers while also making tangible contributions to society.

For partnerships and sponsorships, Babalola called on organizations and individuals interested in supporting underprivileged youths. “There are so many people in need, and we are here to help on behalf of those who want to give but don’t know how,” he stated.
