US supreme court upholds birthright citizenship, backs ban on biological males in girls’ sports

US President, Donald Trump

The Supreme Court of the United States has delivered two landmark rulings, holding that the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees birthright citizenship to children born in the United States, including those whose parents are in the country unlawfully or temporarily, while also voting 6-3 to uphold state laws barring biological males from competing in girls’ and women’s sports.

In its birthright citizenship ruling delivered on Tuesday, the court held that such children are “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States and are therefore citizens at birth under the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

The decision effectively strikes down President Donald Trump‘s executive order that sought to deny automatic citizenship to children born to undocumented or temporary immigrants.

In a separate 6-3 ruling, the court upheld laws allowing schools to limit girls’ and women’s sports teams to biological females. Both decisions are expected to have far-reaching implications for U.S. immigration policy, constitutional law, education policy and transgender rights.
