The Senator, representing Lagos West Senatorial District, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule has distributed over 200 bags of fertilisers to farmers in her constituency, as part of support towards the attainment of food security in the country.

During the distribution of the fertilisers to farmers across the 28 Local Councils and Local Council Development Areas under the senatorial district, held at her constituency office, Ikeja, the senator said she considered it important to support the farmers to enhance their productivity.

Represented by the Director General of her campaign organisation, Rasaq Ajala, who doubles as the Chairman of Odi-Olowo LCDA, Adebule said the gesture was borne out of her love for the people, especially their support and to also ensure that the people at the grassroots benefit from her representation. He said in less than five months in office, the senator is giving out the fertilisers to ensure there is availability of food at cheaper rate.

“It is worthy of note that because the current members of the National Assembly have not appropriated the last budget, therefore our people have not really felt the impact of our senator. What we are doing here today is just a tip of the ice-berg.

“Each of the councils is getting six bags of 50kg fertilisers. We are giving out over 200 bags of fertilisers to organised farmers under the Lagos West Senatorial District, adjudged the largest senatorial district in Nigeria,” he said.

Ajala said in terms of engagement, aside meeting with other ethnic groups and other people in the constituency, the engagement with the farmers will be the first meeting with people operating within the All Progressives Congress (APC) structure. He said the gesture showed the importance Adebule attached to farmers and her drive towards ensuring food security.

The Deputy Chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Lagos State Chapter, Mr. Shakin Agbayewa, who expressed delight for the gesture, pleaded with the senator to initiate a bill to re-open fertilizer blending plants, noting that the re-opening of the plants will crash the price of fertiliser that is currently above N20, 000.
