Leadway Assurance Company Limited has deepened its commitment to Nigeria’s food security by joining forces with the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU), State Governments, and the PULA/Bayer Foundations in a strategic partnership designed to protect smallholder farmers from climate-induced risks.
The initiative will deliver climate-smart agricultural insurance to more than 249,000 smallholder farmers across eight states—Borno, Enugu, Taraba, Ekiti, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Jigawa—helping them withstand shocks such as drought, flooding, and pest outbreaks.
Under the scheme, participating State Governments will subsidize 50% of farmers’ insurance premiums, while the balance is covered through donor support from PULA and the Bayer Foundation. This structure ensures that vulnerable farmers can access critical protection at little or no personal cost, creating a safety net that strengthens resilience and food production across Nigeria.
As part of the awareness drive, the partners will roll out the Harvesting Hope Caravan, a grassroots engagement roadshow spanning four geopolitical zones. The caravan will educate farmers on climate-smart practices, expand access to innovative agricultural solutions, and foster community-level resilience.
Speaking on the collaboration, Mr. Ayoola Fatona, Global Head of Agricultural Risk Solutions at Leadway Assurance, said:
“This partnership is more than insurance—it is about shaping a climate-smart agricultural ecosystem that is resilient, inclusive, and sustainable. By working with PFSCU, PULA, and state governments, we are enabling farmers to secure their livelihoods, embrace innovation, and protect Nigeria’s food systems for generations to come.”
Also commenting, Mr. Gboyega Lesi, Managing Director of Leadway Assurance, noted:
He said, “At Leadway, we recognize the urgent need to support farmers against climate shocks. Our responsibility goes beyond risk transfer—we are equipping farmers with knowledge, advisory services, and practical tools that strengthen resilience. This partnership demonstrates the power of public-private collaboration in building lasting food security for our nation.”
A representative of the PFSCU added that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Food Systems Transformation, reinforcing the government’s commitment to inclusive agricultural growth and resilience.
The Harvesting Hope Initiative underscores the vital role of insurance and advisory services in transforming Nigeria’s agricultural sector. By embedding climate resilience into grassroots engagement, Leadway and its partners are charting a path toward sustainable food security, empowered communities, and inclusive economic growth.

Since 2019, the Bayer Foundation has been a key partner in advancing Pula’s mission to build resilience and financial inclusion for smallholder farmers. As the first donor to support Pula, Bayer helped launch the 10 Million Resilient Farmers initiative, which seeks to insure 10 million farmers globally by 2030.
